As successor of ‘Österreichisches Bundesinstitut für Gesundheitswesen’ (ÖBIG / Austrian Health Institute) that had been founded in 1973, Gesundheit Österreich GmbH (GÖG, Austrian National Public Health Institute) was established on 1 August 2006 on the basis of a federal law (see Founding Law), as the national research and planning institute for health care and a competence and funding centre of health promotion in Austria.
GÖG is owned by the Austrian Federal Government, represented by the Federal Minister of Labour, Social Affairs, Health and Consumer Protection. GÖG’s founding law stresses the institute’s scientific independence. GÖG has two subsidiaries: Gesundheit Österreich Forschungs- und Planungs GmbH (GÖ FP) which provides services for public institutions (non-profit), while Gesundheit Österreich Beratungs GmbH service clients in the private business sector.
One of the core assets of GÖG is, due to its nature as a public health institute serving as a thinktank for health care topics, its strong network with both academic research institutions and public bodies. GÖG is managing several European and international projects with coverage of various countries and is a member of several international societies, such as International Network of Agencies for Health Technology Assessment (INAHTA), International Health Economics Association (IHEA) and European Public Health Association (EUPHA). GÖG/GÖ FP is also involved in WHO or OECD activities.
GÖG comprises three business areas, see organisational chart:
- Österreichisches Bundesinstitut für Gesundheitswesen (ÖBIG / Austrian National Institute for Health Services Research)
- Bundesinstitut für Qualität im Gesundheitswesen (BIQG / Austrian National Institute for Quality in Health Care)
- Fonds Gesundes Österreich (FGÖ / Austrian Health Promotion Fund)
